Overview

Modern Southern Table on High Street in Columbus, Ohio, presents a fresh take on classic Southern cuisine with a welcoming yet efficient vibe. Nestled at 5179 N High St, this spot brings a modern edge to soul food, balancing tradition and contemporary flair. Though seating is limited to just a couple of small tables, the focus here is clear—the food dominates the experience.

The menu shines with Southern staples reimagined for today’s taste buds. Their signature fried fish—particularly the Mississippi-style and cornmeal-breaded swai—hits the perfect crispiness, showcasing a mastery in frying that keeps the inside moist and flavorful. Catfish stands out notably, seasoned well and fried to a golden finish, earning enthusiastic praise from repeat customers who find it reminiscent of beloved family recipes.

The sides, often the unsung heroes in Southern cooking, are strong here. JoJo fries, or thick potato wedges, come seasoned and paired with their house comeback sauce, offering a satisfying tang. Candied yams stand out as a sweet, buttery delight, baked to retain their rich, southern charm. Traditional cornbread here leans into the sweet northern style, complementing heartier sides like collard greens that strike a delicate balance—meaty in texture but not overpowering in salt.

Customer feedback underscores a consistent theme: authenticity and care. Patrons notice the staff’s attentiveness, from friendly service to culinary precision, creating a sense of belonging that feels like a communal Southern table. The small space and limited seating nudge it toward takeout and pickup, yet the warmth in service bridges that gap, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Modern Southern Table clearly appeals to a diverse crowd—families mindful of allergens appreciate the detailed allergen information, while soul food enthusiasts find a rare Columbus gem delivering on depth of flavor and consistency. The location, tucked into a plaza just off a well-traveled corridor, makes it accessible yet still a little hidden treasure for locals craving heartfelt Southern fare.

While there are minor areas for refinement, like expanding menu flexibility for side choices and maintaining consistency in dishes like mac and cheese, the overall quality sustains strong loyalty. The blend of modern convenience—QR code menus, online ordering—and down-home soul food creates a rare harmony that resonates deeply with its audience.

For those seeking classic Southern comfort with a modern restaurant’s polish and efficiency, Modern Southern Table on High Street stands as a must-visit. Its food tells a story of tradition, passion, and community served on a plate, making it a vibrant addition to Columbus’s culinary landscape.

Forget Bud Dairy!!! I'm coming to MST Clintonville.****Food was perfect**** Catfish fried hard with a side of greens and slaw! Perfectly seasoned, fried to perfection, greens meaty not salty, the slaw fresh not wilted, and the small unexpected square of homemade corn bread were exactly like my grandma and aunties. I felt the love! I walked in gave them my order...there is a wait because they were hoppin busy!( said 25 min more like 15 min) I did not mind, went next door to Graceland shopped, got a text that my food was ready. It was perfect! Those gentlemen who cooked Friday night Nov 7th...yall know what ya doing!! Those hostess/cashiers handled they business on that front line!! Hey, cuz we were all family that day for sure! Yasss!! ( there are 2 cocktail tables with chairs but this is not a sit in restaurant, but I'm sure with their hospitality they will serve you...lol)

11/21/25 4pm: This is my first visit to their new location. I ordered via pickup through DoorDash. Upon entering the parking lot off N.High I will admit the signage was a bit difficult to see but they’re located at the corner of the plaza next to Swan’s barbershop. It’s a small modern style drop in location. There’s no public restrooms so please don’t be alarmed. They do have 2 nice tables with two chairs each for general seating or maybe a quick dine. There’s QR sticker codes on the windows that takes you to their online menu/ordering. I love the modern look that they chose and the fact they included their history/ homage in their decorum. I did ask the lady that serviced me if the extras I paid for (pie and sauces) were included and she glanced in the bag and said everything should be there. I expressed how I’d hate to get back across town and items are missed. Well unfortunately I guess by her seeing the sauces she assumed my personal sweet potato pie was in there however it wasn’t. I was pretty bummed because I was really looking forward to trying it and I had a feeling they might miss something. Now as far as the food… BABY somebody did their big one with it. Although the mac could use some improvement my fish and personal favorite candied yams were divine!!! I love their signature sauce!!! I’m craving their candied yams so bad that I want it again today!!! I do wish on DoorDash they’d change the vegetarian sides platter to where you can select two of the same options. Example: two sweet potatoes, one mac. It forces you to choose one of each from the choices that are available that day. Sometimes the candied yams aren’t available to order online as their menu seems to be tailored to certain days and subject to availability. This is my second time patronizing this particular location. In comparison to the first time this time was certainly better. The last time I ordered the fish was overcooked and yams weren’t as good. If they can master consistency and a better mac recipe it’ll be a game changer. I will continue to support them

Excellent food! The young man who took our in-person order for takeout was super friendly and helped our party of four make some tough choices on their many delicious sides. The catfish was absolutely PERFECT. Crispy, perfectly seasoned and deliciously moist and flaky inside. We had greens, black-eyed pea salad (loved it!), candied yams (!), mac & cheese, and baked beans--it was all really good. Seating is limited (2 tables for 2 each); it looks like their customers mainly do take-out.

I'm going to start off and say the food is absolutely amazing. We have been trying to find a good soul food place in Columbus for quite some time. My girl got the fried orange roughy (seasoned perfectly), mac and cheese, yams and greens. Course we had to try a little bit of everything. I got the fried chicken wings, mac and cheese and greens of course, as well as an order of the fried okra. Both meals came with corn bread (10 stars) and We both got sweet tea. EVERYTHING was good. I cannot praise this place enough. If they can maintain that level of food quality , 110% we will be back. The only reason I did not give this place exactly five stars across the board is we had planned on eating there and they only had two tables. Which isn't ideal and not a deal breaker. (Food quality over everything) Do not let that deter you from going because the food was piping hot which we had to let it cool down and all fresh. So guaranteed the food would still be amazing by the time you got it home. So we give it a SOLID 4.9 out of 5!

We finally tried The Modern Southern Table tonight after they recently opened a second location near us on High Street. Everything was excellent! A bonus is that their fried chicken and catfish don't have any dairy or egg so our kids can eat them. We appreciate that they actually have an allergen list on their website. We had mac n cheese, green beans, yams, baked beans, JoJo's, and cornbread for sides. Full bellies for sure. Highly recommend checking them out.

My wife and I tried ST for the first time after being pleasantly surprised to find a soul food place on the north side. We got the Bama Boy and it more than fed the both us. It includes 3 bones of baby back ribs, 1 fried catfish, and 4 wings. All were delicious, though wings were a bit greasy. The collard greens and candied yams were also very good. All in all a good find for authentic southern food up north. We’ll be back.
